Why Maths Trips Students Up — Even the Ones Who Try Hard
Mathematics is cumulative in a way most subjects aren't. A student can miss a chapter of History and still follow the next one. In Maths, a shaky understanding of factorisation means quadratic equations are harder. Weak indices means surds don't click. Uncertainty about the basics of coordinate geometry makes everything from straight lines to circle equations unreliable. The dependencies are real and they compound.
The most common pattern: a student works hard, follows the teacher's examples in class, and produces reasonable marks on familiar question types. Then the paper arrives with questions presented in an unfamiliar format, or requiring two concepts to be applied together, and the performance drops. That gap — between following a method and actually understanding it — is what shows up under exam pressure.
At A-Level the stakes are higher. Pure Maths 1, Statistics, Mechanics, and Pure Maths 2 all build on foundations that were supposed to be solid at IGCSE. Students who arrive at Year 12 with gaps in algebraic manipulation, trigonometry, or graph work find those gaps amplified as the Cambridge 9709 or Edexcel IAL syllabus accelerates. The solution isn't working harder on the same approach. It's finding where the gap actually starts, and addressing it there.
The most common pattern we see at the diagnostic stage: a student is described as "struggling with A-Level Maths" — but the diagnostic reveals the gap started with a specific Year 10 or Year 11 topic. Partial fractions are difficult because algebraic manipulation from IGCSE was never fully secure. Integration by parts is confusing because the basic integration wasn't deeply understood. The new content isn't the problem. The foundation beneath it is. That's what the diagnostic finds, and what the sessions that follow address.

An MSc in Mathematics, a BEd, and currently pursuing a PhD — which means he's still inside the subject academically, not just teaching what he learned a decade ago. That depth matters most at A-Level, where the questions require mathematical reasoning that goes beyond syllabus recall.

Listening to a student attempt a problem and identifying — in the first two minutes — not just that the answer is wrong but which specific misconception produced it is a skill built across thousands of sessions. Understanding before method

A Cambridge student and an Edexcel student taking the same sessions would be using different past papers and different mark-scheme training.

How Edugravity Teaches Mathematics
The sessions don't replicate school. They address what school couldn't do for a student individually — identifying the specific misunderstanding, rebuilding the concept from the right starting point, and building toward confident performance under exam conditions. Here's the sequence.
Before any sessions, a one-hour diagnostic with Sir Nadeer works through material from across the relevant syllabus. The goal isn't a score — it's identifying specifically which concepts a student genuinely understands versus which they've been getting by on through pattern recognition. That distinction is what makes everything that follows targeted rather than repetitive.
If the diagnostic reveals a gap that starts earlier than the current syllabus level — and it often does — sessions go back to address it. A student whose A-Level algebra is shaky because of an IGCSE gap will not make consistent progress until that gap is closed. Going back to fix it properly is faster in the long run than working around it forever.
At six students, Sir Nadeer can look at each student's working during a problem — not just the final answer. In Maths this is essential, because a student can arrive at the right answer via a wrong method that will fail them on the next question that doesn't allow the same shortcut. Correct reasoning, consistently applied, is what the sessions develop.
Cambridge and Edexcel reward specific things in Maths responses — show-that questions, proof structure, presentation of working for method marks, correct notation for calculus and vectors. These aren't cosmetic. They determine whether a student's correct thinking translates into full marks or partial credit. Edugravity teaches these conventions explicitly and throughout the programme.
Past papers are used from early in the programme, not saved for revision. Students work through questions timed, responses are reviewed against the mark scheme, and feedback identifies specifically where marks were and weren't earned. By the time the actual exam arrives, the paper format is familiar and the mark-scheme conventions are second nature.
What the first month typically looks like for a new Maths student
Diagnostic session to identify the specific gaps. Introduction of the first set of past paper questions from the relevant board by week three, with mark-scheme review built into the session.
