Why Chemistry Trips Students Up, Even the Ones Who Try Hard
Chemistry looks like a subject made of separate topics, atomic structure, bonding, organic reactions, equilibrium, but the topics aren't actually separate. A shaky grip on moles and stoichiometry makes titration calculations unreliable. Weak understanding of bonding makes explaining physical properties guesswork rather than reasoning. Uncertain grasp of reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry means every new named reaction feels like starting from zero instead of applying a pattern already learned.
The most common pattern we see: a student follows practical demonstrations in class, can recall definitions accurately, and does reasonably well on straightforward recall questions. Then the paper presents a multi-step calculation, or asks them to explain an observation using more than one concept at once, and the mark drops sharply. That gap, between recognising a fact and reasoning with it under exam pressure, is exactly where Chemistry grades are won or lost.
At A Level the gap widens further. Cambridge 9701 and Edexcel's International A Level Chemistry both assume IGCSE foundations, particularly in moles, equations, and basic bonding, are already secure. A student who reaches Year 12 with a shaky grip on mole calculations finds that gap amplified the moment titrations, equilibrium constants, and enthalpy calculations all lean on the same arithmetic they never fully secured.
