There's a specific surprise a lot of families run into with Computer Science, and it's worth naming directly. A student who codes confidently at home, builds small projects, debugs their own programs, can still come back from an exam with a grade that doesn't reflect any of that. Get one early value wrong, a single misread comparison or an off-by-one error, and every subsequent line in the trace inherits that mistake, even if the student's understanding of the logic itself is completely sound. That's a genuinely different discipline from writing and running code on a computer, where a mistake shows up immediately and gets fixed on the spot rather than compounding silently across a written answer.
It gets more specific still. Cambridge and Edexcel each define their own pseudocode conventions in their specifications, and they genuinely differ, in keywords, in structure, in exactly how a loop or a conditional is written. A student who's learned one board's pseudocode style and sits the other board's exam, or who's only ever practised in Python and never in the exam's actual pseudocode format, can lose marks for structure and syntax even when the underlying logic in their answer is completely correct.
